This is the first release by the band The Cilikis (formerly known as The Cilikis Progressio Project). This album is the initial instrumental progressive rock release before the band decided to change its name to The Cilikis and their song writing focus to a more Jazz / Fusion / Prog influenced song writing which is more abundant in their 2014 EP release, Unusual Conversations.
This entire recording has been 100% engineered, mixed and mastered by CPP themselves in order to fully maintain the DIY nature of the band. Every aspect of this recording has been DIY from the recording of the tracks to the building of guitar effects, speaker cabinets, DIY Mic pre-amps and even do it yourself audio baffles to keep the peace with the neighbours.
Not one single song was recorded in a professional studio and no click tracks or quantising has been used.
The drums were recorded in a room at a rehearsal studio called RockCity Rehearsals at Upper Coomera just around the corner from the drummers home. The bass guitars were recorded by Frank at his home while the rest of the CD was recorded at Brendan’s home in his office.
This CD represents the third recording attempt by the Cilikis Progressio Project. The first incarnation of the CD was meant to be just a few songs, an EP’s worth of tunes but we had so many great tunes to pick from we decided to record them all. A second attempt was made at creating this CD by recording the drums at Station 13 rehearsal studios at Coorparoo in Brisbane.
The guitar tracks had been recorded but Brendan was not happy with the resulting tone of the guitars which eventually lead to the spawning of BMC Guitar Effects and the creation of a couple guitar effect pedals (all used on the recordings at some point or another).
A decision was made to re-record the CD again as Tyronne was not happy with drumming and had made a number of changes to the way he played the songs and Brendan wanted to re-record all the guitars using Tube amps.
In July 2011 Ty and Brendan went back to Rock City in Coomera for the 3rd recording attempt. Frank couldn’t make it as he had to be in New Zealand on personal matters so we ploughed ahead.
Fast forward to November 2012 and after numerous takes and re-takes, recording interruptions, re-tracking, more re-takes, personal matters etc, the recordings are finally completed and the mastering done.
The mastering was completed in-house due to the nature of keeping it DIY and of course, keeping the costs down and to be a learning experience at the same time.
In the end, the recording has been completed and even though it took over three years to complete, its been worth the effort in the end.
We hope you enjoy this recording as much as we enjoyed recording it and writing the songs.
